Israel Demands Complete Halt to Iran’s Uranium Enrichment Ahead of U.S. Negotiations
While U.S. and Iranian officials are getting ready for tough talks in Switzerland, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has laid down tough terms, insisting that Iran must give up all its enriched uranium and be prohibited from any further enrichment. Although Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, indicated a flexibility that could weaken uranium enriched to 60%, he reiterated that "zero enrichment" is a non-negotiable Iranian position. The U.S. is at present adopting a "maximum pressure" policy that combines a huge naval presence in the Middle East with a preference for a negotiated settlement. Going beyond Iran’s nuclear program, Israel is also insisting that the agreement must cover Iran’s development of ballistic missiles and its support for proxy groups in the region, which Iran has always rejected.
